Abstract
478,232. Handling removable loadcontainers. MOTOR TERMINALS, Inc. June 18, 1937, No. 17062. Convention date, June 29, 1936. [Class 78 (iv)] In apparatus for transferring load-containers between road and rail vehicles by mechanism mounted on the road vehicle, provision is made for emergency hand operation of the transfer mechanism in the event of failure of the power. The Figure shows one side of the road vehicle in plan; each side being furnished with pivoted roller bridges 30 coupled to the rail vehicle by the pivoted turn-out members 40. Both rail and road vehicles are provided with skidways and the road vehicle is fitted with driven endless chains F to which the load-container is coupled by rigid bars. During normal operation the chains on each side of the vehicle are driven simultaneously by gearing 11, 12, 14, 16 from a cross-shaft 10 which in turn is geared to the motor H. Should the motor fail, a detachable crank 71. carrying a long pinion 73 is inserted through an orifice at the side of the vehicle so that the pinion 73 engages the gear wheel 11, thus operating the chains and turning the motor armature idly during the process. The frame of the vehicle is strengthened at the points which form the bearings for the crank and the latter is provided with a guiding or pilot-piece 74 at its outer end to facilitate the insertion.
