Abstract

477,525. Slicing - machines. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, H. June 29, 1936, No. 18035. [Class 28 (ii)] In a slicing-machine, the substance holder is angularly adjustable about an axis which is parallel to, or at an upward inclination to, the direction of the relative to-and-fro motion between the carrier of the substance holder and the knife, means being provided whereby automatic angular adjustment of the holder is effected during the operation of the machine. As shown, the substance holder comprises a feed table 10 slidably mounted on bars 21 of a frame which is pivoted, adjacent to the cutting plane, to the carrier or carriage 13. A boss 26 projecting from the table 10 has slidably and turnably mounted therein, the shank of a forked pin 27 which embraces an upright 28 on the casing 11 of the feed mechanism. A ramp 30 is secured to the side member 34 of the carriage 13 and is longitudinally adjustable thereon, the boss 26 being slidable on the inclined surface of the ramp. The feed mechanism is slidable on a guide 1 and the feed nut is controlled by a handle 20. In operation, the ramp is adjusted until the inclination of the feed table brings the face of the meat into the cutting plane. Subsequent operation of the machine moves the upright 28 and, with it, the boss 26 and the table 10, towards the cutting plane, the boss 26 descending the ramp until the feed table reaches the normal horizontal feed position. The posts 17 may carry a clamp bar or an endpiece holder. In a modification, the pivoted feed table is retained in inclined positions by a lever pivoted on the feed mechanism casing, the said lever having a cam surface against which a roller on the feed table bears. The lever is mounted on a shaft which carries the inner circular element of a clutch of the wedging-roller type, the outer element of which is toothed to mesh with a rack on the underside of the carriage 13. A pivotally mounted clutch-disengager is overweighted to swing away from its disengaging position in which it engages projecting ends of the wedging-roller. When the lever is swung into its position of initial adjustment, the table 10 is inclined according to the shape of the meat, and is retained in this position by the clutch holding the lever. In the subsequent operation of the machine, the toothed outer clutch member, moving with the feed mechanism and being meshed with the relatively stationary rack, entrains the inner clutch member and the cam lever, whereby the table 10 is lowered as the feed progresses until it reaches the horizontal position. An arm on the cam lever shaft then abuts against the clutch-disengager and swings it, against its overweight tendency, into its disengaging position, the release of the clutch allowing further feed to be in the normal horizontal manner. A fixed adjustable stop prevents the table from being fed too near to the knife in an inclined position, this stop contacting with the disengager to release the clutch. A stop movable with the feed nut also contacts with the disengager to release the clutch to facilitate hand-adjustment of the feed table. The meat may be held by an end-piece holder mounted for angular correction as described in Specifications 433,819 and 435,338, so that angular correction is effected in two directions, i.e., about a horizontal axis and about a substantially vertical axis. When the meat is held in a trough-like holder, of flattish V-shape or L-shape in section, the axis is upwardly inclined so as to be substantially parallel to one of the sides of the trough, instead of being horizontal as described above. Specifications 266,819, [Class 28 (ii)], and 420,382 are referred to.
