Abstract

477,276. Plate heat - exchangers; cooling dynamo electric machines. POOLE, R., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 19, 1936, Nos. 17151 and 34486. [Classes 29 and 64 (iii)] A partition 1 over the opposite sides of which heat-exchange fluids pass, preferably in counterflow to each other, are provided with fins of expanded sheet metal disposed either in the same direction as, or inclined to, the direction of flow of the fluids. Thus a dynamo - electric machine is provided with circumferentially spaced cooling units 14, Figs. 4, 5, each comprising a partition 15 enclosed to form inner and outer air ducts. The warm air within the machine is circulated by a fan 30 downwardly through the inner ducts, while atmospheric air is drawn upwardly through the open-ended outer ducts by a fan 26 separated by a plate 22 from the interior of the machine. The machine may be provided with a cylindrical partition. An air-cooled oil cooler comprises a flat tubular duct 32, Figs. 7, 8, having fins 39 of expanded sheet metal and disposed in an open-ended casing 38. The oil is supplied to, and discharged from, the duct through manifolds 31a, 35 having baffles 37, while the air flows transversely across the duct between the fins. In a water - cooled apparatus, the water and the oil flow respectively through and over the duct.
