Abstract

476,764. Sewing machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.) July 15, 1936, No. 19613. [Class] 112] A button-clamp for shanked buttons has a self-locking supporting arm and inter. changeable button-support. ing feet recessed to receive the shanks of buttons. The invention is illustrated as applied to a conventional button attaching machine. The clamp has the usual supporting arm 8 hinged to the machine. The arm has a downturned portion 8a providing a seat for any of a number of differently recessed button-supporting feet 12, Fig. 2, adapted to hold respectively buttons with shanks of wire or leather or integral shanks. The material m to which the buttons are to be secured is held on a suitable support 15 mounted on pins 17 projecting from the work - plate 19. The block 15 is adapted for blind stitching. Other blocks may be adapted for through stitching and may have a recess for a stay-button. Cooperating with the foot 12 to hold the button is an arm 20 with a cup-like head 20a for engaging the button x, in this case a wireshanked military button. The arm 20 holds the button shank x<1> in the recess in the foot 12. The head has two button-engaging portions 20b,. 20c. The arm 20 is adjustably mounted for horizontal movement on a part 21 pivoted on a screw 22 in the arm 8a. The arm 20 is clamped to the arm 21 by the nut 23 at a position suitable to the thickness of the button head. The arms 20, 21 are swung to open or close the button clamp by a lever 24 pivoted on the arm 8. The clamp is normally closed by the pressure of the coil spring 28 on the rod 29 carried by the lever. The arm 8 and its parts are normally held in operative position by the spring plunger 31, but may be swung upwards by the chain t and a treadle operated shaft. After the button has been attached, the initial upward movement of the button clamp breaks the thread and brings the head 29a of the rod 29 into engagement with the lower wall 4a of the machine causing the rod 29 to react on the rod 30 and depress the lever 24. This reacts on the lever 27 to cause it to travel down the wall 21b of the slot 21c in the arm 21, so opening the button clamp 20 to release the button. The clamp cannot be opened by the button owing to the positions of the pivot 22 and stud 27.
