The. vaiiable closing ofthe clamp of the present improvement upon materials of different thickness would cause a variation in the initial retracted position of the threadpulling finger, were the latter operatively connected with the upper jaw of the workclamp, and the present invention is designed to insure that-.the thread-pulling finger shall invariably be retracted suiiiciently beyond the needle-path which it crosses in its operative movement to insure against interference with the needlevin the stitching operation. In a sewing machine, the combination with stitch-forming mechanism, of a traveling work-holder having work-clamping jaws one of which is movable toward and front the other', a rock-lever mounted upon a fixed fulcrum and having a universalconnection with the movable jaw of said work-holder, means includinga toggle device connected with said rock-lever for controlling the position of the same, and means for straightening and bending said toggle to close and open the work-holder. f

In a sewing machine, the combination with stitch-forming mechanism, of a travelving work-holder having work clamping jaws one of which is fixed upon a supporting arm and movable toward and from the other, a rock-lever mounted upon a fixed fulcrum, a link intermediate an arm of said rock-lever and the clamp-jaw supporting arm and having universal-joint connections with each, means including a toggle device connected w'ith said rock-lever for controlling the position of the same, and means for straightening and bending said toggle to closeand open the wbrk-holder.
