Abstract

475,712. Making compound forms. KELLOGG CO., M. W. Feb. 6, 1937, No. 3624. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1936. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-Metal articles such as plates, structural iron, e.g. flats, rounds, angles, channel, rail, I, T, or Z sections, cylindrical pressure vessels, pipe elbows, &c., wholly or partially coated with a layer of metal of different composition, e.g. corrosion resisting metal such as chromium iron or chromiumnickel-iron, are made by depositing the coating on the base by maintaining an electric arc between a fusible electrode and the base with the end of the electrode kept beneath a blanket of flux and then deforming the coated base to form the article, e.g. by rolling, forging, extrusion, &c. The coating may be applied to one or more parts of the same surface or the same or different coatings may be applied to a number of surfaces. The coatings may be of different thicknesses. Coating is effected by the process described in Specification 475,709. A billet or slab 13 may have a coating 14 arc welded thereon, the composite billet being rolled in stages to produce a thinner plate 13<1> with a thin coating 14<1>. The original coating is usually about # to ¢" thick. An article with a coating on both sides of different thicknesses may be produced by coating one side, and after partially rolling the slab applying a coating of the original thickness to the other side and then completing the rolling. In making cylindrical pressure vessels from pierced billets rolled out to form seamless cylindrical rings assembled to form the vessel, the coating may be deposited on the external or internal surface of the ring or both at an intermediate stage of the operations. The billet may be coated before or after piercing or the ring may be partly rolled to size before coating and final rolling. The external coating may be of a metal resistant to corrosion by weather or fumes and the inside coating of a metal resistant to the contents of the container. A rectangular or polygonal billet may be coated on all its sides and then rolled. A cylindrical billet may have the coating deposited on its curved surface and ends or may be coated on its curved surface and after rolling or forging cut to length and coated on its ends. A pipe elbow 20, Fig. 9, with a coating 21 may be formed by forging or extruding in dies a cylindrical billet coated on its surface and ends, the thickness of the coating varying at different parts of the blank, according to the shape of the resulting article.
