[Class 76] [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for surfacing leather and other sheet material comprises a rigid drum covered with flexible abrasive sheet material, a feed roller, and a pinch roller parallel to the drum and co-operating to feed the material to be treated. The machine is of the construction described in Specification 475,044 and comprises an abrasive-covered drum 90, and a feed roll 62 journalled in supports carried by slides movable away from the drum 90 by the operation of a treadle lever 46 and bell-crank lever 41. The pinch roll 65 is carried by arms 68 pivoted at 69 to standards 71. The abrasive drum is provided with a helical groove 110 to receive the overlapping edges of a sheet of abrasive material 111 wound round the drum and secured at its ends to adjustable heads 100, 100a. These heads are adjustable so as to tension the material in a helical direction, corresponding with the helical groove of the drum, by means of a device enclosed within the drum and including a shaft 94 journalled in webs 91 and having mounted thereon a fixed pinion 96 and a loose pinion 96a meshing with gears 97, 97a having screw-threaded engagement with plugs 98, 98a extending from the heads 100, 100a. The shaft 94, and the pinion 96a are respectively rotated, by means of a squared end 95 and a socket 95a, to effect endwise movement of the heads which are caused at the same time to move helically by the engagement of cam grooves 107, in plates 105 fixed to the heads, with pins projecting from the drum. The abrasive material is secured to the heads by locking bands 116 which are tensioned by means of levers 120, Fig. 3, engaging one end of each band and adjustable by screws 122. U.S.A.
