BANDAGE-WINDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN FRANCIS G L- LOWAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bandage-Winding Devices, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates generally to apparatus for winding sheet material and particularly relates to manually operable bandage winding devices.
In the art of winding and reeling sheet material, power-driven machines, of massive and complicated structure, designed to be operated by trained and skilled workmen are in common use. Machines of this type fill, in a satisfactory manner, a distinct field in the art but are obviously not adapted for use by individuals, or small groups of individuals, whose work is generally of a charitable nature and on a comparatively small scale and who, therefore, require simple, inexpensive and manually operable devices that will, nevertheless, rapidly produce bandage rolls that are uniformly and compactly wound. The main object of the present invention is to provide a manually-operable bandage winding device that will satisfactorily fulfil these requirements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device in which the necessary tension in the web for insuring the compact winding of the roll is automatically produced by the action of the web itself in passing through the device.
With these and other objects in view, one feature of the invention consists in the -pr0 vision of a winding device having web smoothing means through which the web is threaded in such manner as to automatically produce sufficient tension therein to obtain a 1 iompact and uniformly wound bandage r0 Another feature of the invention consists in providing a winding device which can be clamped to the edge of a table or the like and through which the web is threaded across the edge of the table, through guiding and turning means, into an accessible path parallel and adjacent the table edge. Other features of the invention will be referred to as the specification proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that the invention may be carried out by other embodiments different from that specifically selected for illustration.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention and showing in dotted lines a web threading position of the web smoothing means.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device taken along the line 83 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line of Fig. 3, of the reeling device showing a roll of wound web in position.

Fig. 6 is a detail view of a modified form of means for holding the movable reel flange member in place.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing there is shown a complete embodiment of the invention in which a reeling device shown at 1 is arranged to draw a web of material 2 through a smoothing device 3 and a turning means 4t supplied with a fixed gage member 5 and a movable gage member 6. The device, as a whole, is supplied with a supporting base 7 adapted to be clamped to any suitable support, such as a table top 8, by means of a clamping device 9. The reeling device 1 is made up of a core member 10 having a hexagonal or other formation suitable for gripping and turning the web. The core member 10 is adapted to be withdrawn from its position when the bandage roll carried thereby has reached the desired size. A. suitable hand crank 11, attached to one end of the core member 10, provides for the manual operation of the device to effect winding of the web. A fixed flange member 12, mounted in the frame member 7 at one side of the device, serves to guide one end of a roll of rewound material. During the winding operation, the other end of the roll is preferably guided by a movable flange member 13 carried by a hollow supporting member 1 1 slidably mounted in the frame piece 7. A spring 15 is arranged to continually press the movable flange member 13 into engagement with the other end of the corresponding roll.
In order to properly smooth the web as it is drawn into position on the reeling device, a smoothing device 3 is provided. This device consists of a set of fixed rods 16 mounted in the frame so as to lie transversely to the path of the web engaged thereby. The rods 16 are so spaced as to provide room therebetween for a plurality of similar rods 17 carried by a hinged frame member 18 in such manner that the rods 17 are interposed in alternate arrangement when the frame 18 is moved to its closed position. By reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the relative arrangement of the two sets of rods 16 and 17 causes the interposed web to pass through the series of rods in convoluted or waved formation so that a considerable part of the surface of each rod is brought to bear against the face of some one of the other rods to exert a snioothing action on the web that will remove folds and wrinkles there from.
In order to exert a su'llicient degree of pressure on the web as it passes through these series of rods 16 and 17, the web is deflected from its natural'path between the last rod of the series and the reeling device and is caused to pass over and bear against a transversely mountedtensicning member 19 on the end of the swinging frame piece 18. It will be seen that by this arrangement the web operates to hold the swinging member in its closed position and in this Way causes pressure to be exerted on the web by the smoothing rods which not only enhances the smoothing action produced by the rods, but also brings about a compact and uniform winding of the web as it is drawn to its place in the reeling device 1.
In order to thread the web through the smoothing device 3,it is necessary merely to raise the swinging member 18 from its closed to an open position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and to draw the web underneath. the hinged end of the swinging member 18, thence-underneath the complete series of smoothing rods 17 carried by the swinging member, and thence over the transverse tensioning member 19 to the reeling device 1. It will be seen that when the end of the web has been attached to the core member 10 by the simple expedient of wrapping the end of the web around the core member, a bandage roll can be formed by merely turning the hand crank 11, since any regulation that is required of the tension exerted on the web roll is automatically provided by the web itself as it passes through the smoothing device and over the tension member 19.
Another important feature of the device resides in its adaptability for mounting along the edge of a table, such as is indicatedat 8, and for drawing the supply of material over the edge of the tablefrom any suitable receptacle mounted therebeneathl In order to effect'this arrangement, a turnin'g device 4L-is provided which is set at such an angle to the direction of the Web path through the maehineas to produce a right angle turn in the web as is indicated at 20 in Fig. 2 of the drawing. lhe fixed gage member 5 is mounted 011 the upper side of the support 7 in alinement withthe flange member 12 of the reeling device so as to guide the corresponding edge of the web through the smoothing-device into proper position on the web roll. The gage member (5 is provided for cooperation with the web and, inv order to provide for webs of ditl'erent widths, the gage member 6 is preferably mounted on the supporting rod 21 slidably mounted in a channel 22 in the frame member and adapted to be fixed in any desired position by means of the locking device 2-3. The gage member 6, as will be seen, engages the web 2 before the right angle turn over the edge of the turning device 4 has been made. Preferably, the slidable rod 21 is provided at its outer extremity with a transversely turned end 2% that serves to prevent displacement of-the entering web from its path. It will be seen that by this arrangement, material can be fed into the device across the edge of the table, whereupon it is diverted to a path parallelto, and closely adjacent, the table edge where it can be closely observed by theoperator as it is woundv into place on the reeling device 1 through the accessibly located hand crank 11. Itwill be obvious that the web can be fed directly into the V smoothing device 3 along the fixed gage member 5 without passing over the turning device 4, if found desirable.
hen the roll in the reeling device has reached the required size, it is a simple matter to remove it from its place by rotating the core shaft 10 in a reverse direction for a few turns and Withdrawing the core 10 bodily from its place. As will be seen, this frees the roll and it then can be readily slipped from its position between the flanges 12 and 13.
lnstead of employingthe spring 15 for holding the flange 13 in place, the hollow flange supporting member 1d may be clamped in any desired position in the corresponding divided end ofithe frame member 7 by means of the clamping screw 25 as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.

A bandage winding device comprising: a reel. shaft on Which the materialis Wonud, a web tensioning device through which the web passes in. a substantially horizontal path to the reel shaft, web turning means for directing the web from asubstantially horizontal path at an angle to said firstnamed path into said tensioning device, web guiding means engaging one-edge ofthe web along said first-named p'ath, and web guiding means engaging the other edge of the web along said second-named path.
2. A bandage Winding device comprising: a reel shaft on which the material is wound, a web smoothing device through which the web passes to the reel shaft, said smoothing device including a fixed member and a movable member, said members being adapted to engage the opposite sides of the interposed web, and means whereby the web holds the movable member in a position to engage and press the Web-into engagement with the fixed member.
3. A bandage Winding device comprising: a reel shaft on which the material is Wound, a Web smoothing device through which the web passes to the reel shaft, said smoothing device including a series of web engaging members mounted in fixed positions across the path of the web and a hinged frame carrying a series of web engaging members adapted to be moved into positions between the fixed members to cause the interposed web to take a convoluted path, and a member carried by said hinged frame over Which the web is passed to hold said frame in operative position.
4:. A bandage Winding device comprising: web reeling means, actuating means, for rotating said reeling means, located at one side of the device, and Web turning means, admitting infeeding of the web from the side on which the actuating means is located, for turning and leading said Web to the reeling means.
5. A bandage Winding device comprisin web reeling means, actuating means, for rotating said reeling means, located at one side of the device, and Web turning means, admitting infeeding of the web from the side on which the actuating means is located, for turning and leading said web to the reeling means, and a Web smoothing means between the turning and reeling means.
