Abstract

474,938. Calculating - machines. WANDERER-WERKE VORM. WINKLHOFER & JAENICKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 1, 1936, No. 26662. Convention date. Oct. 12, 1935. [Class 106 (i)] The member controlling the engagement of the totalizer is adapted to make a complete reciprocation in the forward stroke of the main operating member and a second complete reciprocation during the return stroke of the main operating member. As described, this action occurs during total-taking only. One totalizer can thus be engaged, zeroized and disengaged during the forward stroke and a second totalizer can be engaged during the return stroke so that the total can be transmitted from the first to the second totalizer. Two forms are described. The first, Figs. 1 and 3, has two totalizers, one adding and subtracting, the second adding only. Positive totals only can be transmitted from the first to the second totalizer, the total key becoming locked if an attempt is made to transmit a negative total. In the second form, Figs. 4 and 5, during total-transmitting operations, the total from the first totalizer is transmitted to a second totalizer. if positive and to a third if negative, the correct receiving totalizer being automatically selected in accordance with the sign of the total. Selection of totalizers. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 3, two totalizers are provided. The first 9 can add and subtract and is engaged by the anticlockwise rocking of an arm 15. The second totalizer 10 can add only and is engaged by the anticlockwise rocking of an arm 16. The arms 15, 16 are rocked to engage the totalizers 9, 10 by the movement to the right of a control member or slide 24, the arm 15 being connected to the slide by a latch 38 and the arm 16 by a latch 41, the latches being interconnected by a link 40 so that one totalizer only can be engaged at any time. The latch 38 controlling the first totalizer 9 is disengaged and that controlling the second totalizer 10 is engaged by moving a finger lever 55 from A to B, thus rocking clockwise a lever 49 about its pivot 50 so that a cam surface 48 on the lever 49 engages a pin 47 to rock the latch 38. The subtraction key 93 is locked by a blocking link 90, since the totalizer 10 is for addition only. The main shaft 1 is oscillated first anticlockwise and then clockwise and at the beginning of the return stroke a pin 22 on a plate 21 on the shaft engages a pawl 30 pivoted to the control slide 24 and pushes this slide to the right to engage the selected totalizer, the slide being returned at the end of the operation by a pin 23 engaging a surface 39 of the slide. In the machine shown in Fig. 4, the second totalizer is replaced by three totalizers 109, 119, 129 which are engaged with actuating racks 111 by arms 118, 128, 138. These arms are operated by a slide 146 moved by the latch 41. The totalizer 109 is connected to the slide 146 by a latch 115 set manually or by a carriage cam. A latch 125 pivoted to the slide 146 connects either one or the other or neither of totalizers 119, 129. These latter totalizers are active during total taking, as described below. Total-taking. When the finger lever 55, Fig. 1, is in the position A in the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the total key 78 is depressed, the machine is set into operation to take a total from the first totalizer 9 and transmit it to the second totalizer 10. The total key can be depressed (with the finger lever in the A position) only if totalizer 9 contains a positive total. Positive totals only are thus accumulated in totalizer 10. When the finger lever is in position B and the total key 78 is depressed, a total is taken from totalizer 10. When the finger lever is in position C the total key is free irrespective of the sign of the total in totalizer 9 and when the total key is depressed, a total is taken from totalizer 9 but is not added into totalizer 10. The finger lever 55 controls a type sector to print a symbol showing the setting of the lever. The total key is free at all times in the machine shown in Fig. 4, but when the finger lever is in position A a total is taken from totalizer 9 and transmitted to totalizer 129. if positive and to totalizer 119 if negative. The depression of the total key 78, Fig. 1, rocks a lever 77 connected to a lever 73 which starts the motor to take the total. The lever 77 also rocks a lever 66 clockwise whereby a link 65 moves a pawl 34 on the control slide 24 so that a pin 23 moves the slide to the right at the commencement of the operation to engage the totalizer 9. The movement of the link 65 to the left also allows a spring 82 to rock a latch 81 into engagement with a pin 83 on the latch 38. The lever 77 also moves another latch 29 on the slide 24 into the path of the pin 22 so that the slide 24 is returned to the left at the end of the first half stroke, thus disengaging totalizer 9. This movement, by the interaction of the latch 81 and pin 83, releases the latch 38 and engages the latch 41 so that, at the beginning of the return stroke, when the pin 22 acts on the pawl 30 to push the control slide 24 to the right once more, the totalizer 10 is engaged and the total from totalizer 9 is transmitted to it. A lever 62 pivoted at 64 is connected to the link 65 and to a rod 96 which is opposite an opening 99 in a slide 89, Fig. 3, when the total in totalizer 9 is positive. If the total is negative, the rod 96 is swung to the dotted position shown in Fig. 3, where it is blocked by the slide 89 and the total key thus cannot be depressed. To release the key, the finger lever 55 is moved to position C whereby the lever 49 is swung so far clockwise that it releases a pin 57 on a bar 58, the bar then descending and pulling down the slide 89 so that the enlarged upper part of the opening 99 comes opposite the rod 96 and allows this rod to move to the right. The bar 58 is at the same time coupled to the lever 62 by a recess 63 so that when the total key is depressed the bar is moved to the right to rock a lever 60 which swings the pawl 30 clear of the pin 22 whereby the control slide 24 is not moved during the second half-stroke of the machine and thus totalizer 10 remains inactive. In the machine shown in Fig. 4, if the total in totalizer 9 is negative, and the finger lever 55 is in the A position, then the rod 96 is swung so that a projection 133 upon it is in the path of a lever 130. When the total key is depressed the rod 96 moves to the right and rocks the lever 130 to lift a link 127 which rocks the lever 125 and changes over the connection so that the totalizer 129 is left inactive and the negative total from totalizer 9 is added into totalizer 119. If the total is positive the rod 96 is swung so that the projection 133 is clear of the lever 130, a spring 132 then maintaining the levers 130 and 125 in the positions shown so that the positive total from totalizer 9 is added into totalizer 129. Subtotal-taking. The depression of the subtotal key 67, Fig. 1, operates the same mechanism and starts the motor to set the machine in operation as does the depression of the total key, excepting that the pawl 29 is not moved into the path of the pin 22 so that the control slide 24 remains in its right-hand position (and so keeps the selected totalizer in engagement) during both halves of the machine stroke.
