305,579. Herzstark, S. J. Feb. 7, 1928, [Convention date]. Adding and subtracting apparatus; adjusting for recording only; printing totals and sub-totals. - A calculating-machine is provided with column counters in addition to the usual line counters, these column counters being disposed behind or below the stationary typing a. n d counting-mechanisms, and being actuated by subsidiary racks linked with the main racks. Totals and sub-totals may be taken from the column counters by operation of special keys controlling the timing of engagement of the selected counter with the subsidiary racks. Fig. 1 shows the invention as applied to a machine having type racks 1 controlled in extent of movement by key-set stops 2 and connected with actuating racks 6 for the usual stationary counter 8. Adjustably mounted on a. bar 12 swung by links 11 from the paper carriage 10 are the column counters 15 adapted to engage the subsidiary racks 20 controlled from the main racks 1 by levers 17 and links 19 co-operating with lugs 20<1> on the racks. The column counters are timed for engagement by means of a cam disc 30, Fig. 2, the periphery of which is engaged by a bifurcated lever 28 carrying rollers 27, 27<1> in contact with a bar 26 secured to the counter-carrying bar 12. The disc is operated during the cycle of operation by means of a lever 32 carrying two oppositely acting pawls 34, 35 and rocked to and fro through 90‹ by a connection 33 with the main crank. The effectivity of the pawls is controlled by dogs 38, 39 mounted on levers 36, 37 pivoted at 31 and controlled in position by notched sectors 40, 41. Depression of a key 42, Fig. 4, rotates the sector 41 to set the lever 37 in such a position as to disable the pawl 35 on the return stroke. Consequently the control disc remains in the position for disengagement of the counter so that the item is not registered. If key 43 is depressed lever 36 is swung up and the two pawls are controlled in such a manner as to produce the engagement of the counter with the racks throughout their movements in order to give a sub-total. If both keys 42, 43 are depressed, as by use of a key 48, both levers 36, 37 are displaced and the control disc is shifted to time the engagement and disengagement of the counter for total-taking. The levers 36, 37 are held in their extreme positions by latches 44, 45. Transfer-mechanism.-The actuating-racks 20 are permitted an extra step of movement at the end of their return stroke when spring-controlled stop-arms 22 are released by latch members 21 shifted at transfer by the transfer teeth 23. The stop-arms are restored by a bail 25 connected with the rocking-lever 32 by a link 49.
