Abstract

903,879. Calculating-machines. OLIVETTI & CIE. S.p.A., C. Sept. 6, 1960 [Sept.14, 1959], No. 30645/60. Addition to 840,018. Class 106 (1). In a calculating machine having a driving mechanism as described in the parent Specification, and comprising a handle moved through a forward stroke during which it is disconnected from the main operating mechanism and then returned by a spring to actuate the operating mechanism, function control mechanism is set by the handle during its forward stroke. Driving mechanism.-During the forward stroke of the handle 10 (clockwise as seen in Fig. 1), a sector 13 is rocked counterclockwise by a link 12 to rotate a wheel 17 which forms one member of a one-way coupling, Fig. 2 (not shown). During this forward stroke the coupling is disengaged but when the sector 13 is returned by a spring 16, the coupling rotates a mainshaft 18 through one revolution. A slide 25 actuated by the sector 13 releases the mainshaft 18 at the end of the forward stroke and arrests it once more at the end of the return stroke. Addition and subtraction.-The totalizer 51, Fig. 4, comprises meshing pairs of pinions and is mounted on pins 52 in slides 53 so as to be rockable to engage one set of pinions or the other with the actuators 56 for addition or subtraction respectively. Machine functions are selected by a hand lever 31 rockable and slidable with a shaft 32. It is shown in its central addition position. For subtraction, it is moved to the right; this movement, by virtue of the engagement of a bifurcated end of the lever 31 in a bifurcated end of a lever 36 see also Fig. 1, rocks the lever 36 counterclockwise. A lever 71, Figs. 5 and 6, follows and a cam slot 69 shifts a bail 59 so as to move a stud 61 from the path of a slide 64 and a stud 60 into its path. Thus when the slide 64 is actuated by the slide 25 during the forward stroke, the bail 59 is rocked and a rack 57 rotates the pin 52 and hence the totalizer frame. In a subsequent addition operation, the slide 64 engages the pin 61 to restore the bail 59 and the totalizer frame. Negative totals.-The mechanism just described is also controlled in total-taking in accordance with the sign of the total. A member 78 is positioned as shown in Fig. 5, when the total is positive but is moved, as described in Specification 699,954, to the dotted line position when the total is negative. For total and subtotal taking, the control lever 31 is moved to its upper and lower positions respectively so that a tail 76 of a lever 75 on the shaft 32 remains in alignment with the member 78. When the control lever 31 is set, the lever 36 is again rocked, but if the total is positive, the member 78 blocks the lever 71 through the lever 75 so that the add pinions are engaged with the actuators. If the total is negative, however, the lever 71 is able to follow the lever 36 so as to cause the subtract pinions to be engaged with the actuators. Totalizer engagement mechanism.-The slide 53 supporting the totalizer is arranged to be shifted by rocking of a plate 81 about a shaft 54. For addition and subtraction, this rocking is effected by cams 87, 88 on the mainshaft which engage followers 83, 84 carried by the plate. When the control lever 31 is moved upwardly or downwardly for total or subtotal operations, surfaces 115, 116 are placed in the path of a lever 110, instead of a blocking surface 114, to allow this lever different degrees of movement. The lever 110 is released by the slide 25 and is coupled through a slide 105 and a lever 103 to slide the plate 81 along the shaft 54 so as to disengage the followers 83, 84 from the mainshaft cams and engage a lug 89 with a slide 91. At the end of the forward stroke of the handle 10, a stud 97 in the sector 13 shifts the slide 91 to the right so as to engage the totalizer prior to movement of the actuators and the slide 91 is restored by the engagement of the stud 97 or a shorter stud 98 with a shoulder 100 during the return stroke. For total-taking, the plate 81 is moved sufficiently far as to rock the slide 91 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4 so as to bring it into the path of the shorter stud 98. The totalizer is thus disengaged before the actuators are restored. For sub-total taking, the slide 91 is not rocked and the stud 97 is effective to disengage the totalizer near the end of the operation after the actuators have been restored. For non-add operations, the hand lever 31 is moved to the left where its surface 114 is aligned with a notch 117 in the end of the lever 110 which is thus permitted sufficient movement to disengage the followers 83, 84 but insufficient to engage the plate 81 with the slide 91. The totalizer thus remains disengaged throughout the cycle.
