Abstract

474,909. Braid. CROSSLEY (PACKINGS), Ltd., H., and CROSSLEY, A. May 9, 1936, No. 13127. [Class 74 (i)] A solid plaited material for gland packings &c. consists of two diagonally arranged sets of bracing strands (e.g. A, B), combined with one, two, or three sets of binding strands (shown respectively at C, Fig. 5, F and G, Figs. 11 and 12, or K, Land M, Figs. 17, 18 and 19), these binding strands being laid by bobbins moving in symmetrically arranged tracks which carry each strand to the surface of the plait at at least two points at opposite ends of a line passing through the centre of the tracks. Longitudinal core strands may be introduced in any or all of the spaces between the intersecting sets of strands so varying the cross-section of the braid according to their number and size, it being symmetrical when none or all of the spaces are filled. Fig. 20 shows, diagrammatically, a typical crosssection. Differing materials 'may be used for binding and bracing strands.
