Abstract

474,799. Cleaning-rods for firearms. RILEY, L. S. Jan. 16, 1937, No. 1369. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1936. [Class 119] Relates to collapsable cleaning-rods comprising a number of sections held together by an internal cord. According to the invention, the cleaning-rod comprises a cleaning terminal 20, a tubular handle terminal 21, a plurality of intermediate tubular sections each made up of two concentric tubes 22, 25, a shank 27 on the cleaning terminal 20 adapted to enter one end of the outer tube 22 of the adjacent section and thereby project the inner tube 25 beyond the other end of its tube 22 and into the end of the tube 22 of the next section, a cable 24 passing through the intermediate sections and attached to the cleaning terminal 20 at one end and to a locking member 40 at the other end, and a sleeve 35 slidably mounted on the handle terminal and having an internal thread for engagement with external threads on the handle terminal so as to tighten the parts together into a stiff rod or to relax them for disengagement. The handle terminal has a longitudinal slot to receive the cable 24 when the locking member 40 has been released by the sleeve 35 and thus allow the sections to be disengaged and folded one against the other as shown in Fig. 6, complete separation being prevented by a solid collar 36. In a modification, the handle terminal has a longitudinally slotted wooden sleeve to provide a better grip. In another modification, the parts are made smaller for use in cleaning pistols.
