Abstract
474,630. Delivering coins from hoppers. BRECKNELL, MUNRO, & ROGERS (1928), Ltd., and DOLMAN, H. J. May 15, 1936, No. 13733. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVIII] In apparatus for delivering change coins from a bulk supply, the coins are fed successively to a passageway leading to the exterior of the apparatus, and actuate. a control device in the passageway which stops delivery to the passageway after a predetermined number or value have been delivered. As shown, change coins are stored in bulk in a hopper 12, secured to a shaft 9, which, for the purpose of agitating the coins, is rotated through bevel gearing 10, 11 from a motor driven shaft 6. The base of the hopper comprises a plate 18 carried by a sleeve 5 rotated at a higher speed through gearing 7, 8 from the shaft 6. The plate 18 has a recessed periphery 20 with spaced projections 22 which pick up the coins singly into seatings between, and feed them to a channel structure 33, let into the side of a stationary dished base member 16, and serving to convey the coins outside the apparatus. As each coin passes through the channel 33, it rocks a spring retracted lever 39 connected with a pawl 45 driving a ratchet wheel 47 fast with a cam disc 49. This cam disc engages a roller 54 at one end of a pivoted lever 53 whose other end is adapted to hold and release a bell-crank 68. At one end the bell-crank 68 is provided with an element 65 for closing contacts 66 in the circuit of the motor driving the shaft 6, and a boss 71 engageable by the armature 72 of a solenoid 74, and at the other end a finger 76 adapted to enter apertures 25 in the plate 18 for the purpose of dislodging the coins before they reach the discharge channel 33. In operation, the solenoid 74 is momentarily energized, either by insertion of a coin for which change is required or by a manually operated switch, and its armature 72 turns the bell-crank 68 (clockwise, Fig. 3) to close the motor contacts 66 and withdraw its finger 76 from the hopper base 18. The bell-crank is held in this position by the end of the lever 56, which was turned (anticlockwise, Fig. 2) by a spring 59 when released by the bell-crank. In this position of the lever 56 its roller 54 engages the cam 49 immediately to one side of one of a number of equally spaced projections 50. As each change coin passes out through the channel 33, it rocks the lever 39, and steps forward the cam 49. After the appropriate number of coins have been delivered, the next projection 50 on the cam 49 trips the lever 56 to release the bell-crank 68 which thereupon opens the motor contacts 66 and engages its finger 76 with the hopper base 18. During continued rotation of the motor under its inertia, the finger 76 passes through successive apertures 25 in the hopper base in turn and dislodges the coins from their seatings so that no further coins are delivered. The motor may rotate the hopper and its base continuously, the delivery of coins being controlled entirely by the finger 76 ; or, alternatively, the delivery may be controlled entirely by the starting and abrupt stopping of the motor in which case the finger 76 is dispensed with.
