Abstract
Soaps, free from unsaponifiable constituents, are made by treating a mixture of fatty acids and unsaponifiable constituents with alkali, and extracting the saponified product with an organic solvent, after removing some of the unsaponifiable constituents by distillation. Suitable initial materials are waxes, fatty oils such as sperm oil, or the oxidation products of hydrocarbons such as paraffin wax, middle oil, hydrogenated oils. The oil or fatty acid mixture is saponified with caustic soda or potash, ammonia or amines such as methylamine, diethylamine or ethanolamine. The saponification product may be distilled under reduced pressure, with or without steam. Alternatively the aqueous saponified mixture is heated to 200 to 350 DEG C. under a pressure of 50 to 150 atmospheres in a closed vessel, and then the pressure is released, e.g. by spraying the mixture, when the steam carries off the unsaponifiable constituents. The soap residue is then extracted preferably in finely divided form, with benzine, benzene, cyclohexane, acetone, methylethyl ketone, methyl formate or acetate, propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, or amyl-alcohol, or cyclohexanol, ether, nitrobenzene or pyridine, leaving a colourless soap.
