Abstract

In the thermal conversion of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into hydrocarbons having more than one carbon atom and/or their oxygen-containing derivatives, the catalyst is prepared by adding to a previously precipitated reducible compound of a metal of the iron group a compound of another metal, which on heating yields an oxide not reducible by hydrogen below 900 DEG C., and subsequently heating the mixture in a reducing gas to a temperature above 500 DEG C. so that a partial sintering of the catalyst takes place. The non-reducible ingredient may be a compound of an earth metal, e.g. aluminium, beryllium, manganese, zinc, thorium, cerium, or zirconium. It may be added in the form of a precipitate or of an aqueous dispersion or solution, which last may be precipitated after admixture with the iron metal compound. A third component consisting of a compound forming a reducible metal oxide, e.g. copper nitrate, may also be incorporated in the mixture. According to an example, moist precipitated ferric hydroxide is mixed with a suspension of aluminium hydroxide, dried, and reduced in hydrogen at 850 DEG C. The product contains 5 per cent of alumina with respect to the amount of metallic iron.ALSO:A catalyst for reactions between carbon monoxide and hydrogen is prepared by adding to a previously precipitated reducible compound of a metal of the iron group a compound of another metal, which on heating yields an oxide not reducible by hydrogen below 900 DEG C., and subsequently heating the mixture in a reducing gas to a temperature above 500 DEG C. so that a partial sintering of the catalyst takes place.
