Abstract
Cellulose or cellulose derivative-containing textile materials, or wool, in the form of fibres, yarns or woven materials are rendered water-repellant by superficial reaction with isocyanates containing an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl residue with a saturated alkyl residue of at least 10 carbon atoms or a saturated or unsaturated residue of an alcohol of the sterol group. The isocyanates may be of the general formula R.CO.N.CO, and may contain the atoms or groups O, S, N, COO, OCO, NR, CONR, NRCO, SO2, NRSO2, SO2NR when R represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical. Fatty acid azides may also be employed. The textile is passed through a solution of the isocyanate in a suitable solvent and thereafter subjected to a temperature of above 100 DEG C. for several minutes. Cellulose or cellulose derivative fibres may be treated immediately after spinning, or the isocyanate may be added to a cellulose acetate spinning solution. In examples: (1) a printed cr<\>zepe, having a de-lustered viscose rayon warp and viscose cr<\>zepe weft, is treated with a solution of octadecylisocyanate and heated, first to 100 DEG C. and then to 140 DEG C.; (2) acetate satin having acetate satin warp and viscose cr<\>zepe weft is sprayed with a solution of dodecylisocyanate and heated to 130 DEG C.; (3) cuprammonium silk is immersed in a solution of eicosylisocyanate and heated to 150 DEG C.; (4) octadecylisocyanate is added to a spinning solution of cellulose acetate in acetone; (5) cotton fabric is treated with a solution of heptacosylisocyanate and heated to 150 DEG C.; (6) a viscose rayon fabric is treated with a solution of 1-stearyl oxyphenylene-4 isocyanate and further treated as in (1); (7) wool muslin is treated with a solution of cholesterol adipic acid ester azide and heated to 140 DEG C.; and (8) worsted fabric is treated with octacosane acid azide and heated to 140 DEG C. Cholesterol adipic acid ester azide is prepared by reacting cholesterol with adipic acid dichloride to form the semi-ester acid chloride and then reacting this with sodium azide.
