Abstract
473,598. Vehicle spring suspensions. BASTOW, D. March 17, 1936, No. 8047. Class 108 (ii)] In steering-wheel suspensions of the type in which the wheel assembly is carried by pivoted link members the latter are connected to the wheel by universal joints of the Hookes or trunnion and socket type which are located within the perimeter of or close to the back plate of brake drum. Fig. 1 shows upper and lower wish-bone links D, D<1> connected to the wheel axle A by means of universal joints comprising members E, Fig. 3, having trunnions taking into sockets formed in the forks formed in the ends of the links D D<1> and in the forks on the wheel assembly. These latter forks may be, as shown at D<3>, bolted to the brake back plate B or, as shown at C<1> carried by arms C from the axle. Figs. 4 and 6 show a modification in which the forks E<2> on the wheel assembly and the forks on the links are provided with outwardly projecting trunnions E<3>, E<4> respectively which fit into sockets formed in a ring member F. Fig. 10 shows another arrangement in which the links D, D<1> project into the brake drum A<1> and are jointed to an axle member H by means of trunnions H<3> formed on members rotatable on the pins H<1> formed as extensions of the member H, nuts H<4> and washers H<5> completing the assembly. Dust covers J on the links D, D' are provided.
