[Class 112] A ruffler comprises a ruffling blade 15 reciprocated by an arm 13 pivoted on a frame 10 and having a shoulder 17 adapted to be actuated by one of a pair of pawls 30, 31 pivoted on a pin 29 carried by a lever 11 which is rocked by the needle bar. The pawl 31 engages the shoulder 17, and the pawl 30 engages a ratchet wheel 22, provided with two deep notches 23 separated by five shallow notches 24. One or both pawls may be moved to inoperative position by a lever 37 provided with a cam 38 and pivoted between the ends 35 36 of the pawls. When the end of the lever 37 enters a slot 41 in the lever 11, it holds both pawls inoperative. When the pawl 30 engages the shallow notches 24, the pawl 31 is out of contact with the shoulder 17, and no movement of the ruffling blade occurs. When it engages the deep notches 23, as it will every sixth stroke of the lever 11, the pawl 31 will engage the shoulder 17, and the ruffling blade will be operated as a six-stitch ruffler. If one of the notches is covered by a pivoted mask 25, the ruffler is operated every twelve stitches. If the lever 37 is operated to raise the pawl 30 out of contact with the ratchet while leaving the pawl 31 in contact with the shoulder 17, the ruffler is operated at every stitch.
