Abstract
473,113. Stencilling; ruling-machines. TURNER TANNING MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (Turner Tanning Machinery Co.) Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30298. [Class 100 (ii)] Ornamental designs are produced on sheet material such as leather or fabrics by spraying colour through a stencil to produce first a group of overlapping stripes of the same or different colours and then another group of similarly arranged stripes disposed at an angle to the first group. A stencil is mounted in a counterbalanced frame 18, pivoted to an inclined bed 10 by means of pins 46 resting in forked brackets 50 to allow lateral movement of the frame. A tanned skin 16 is laid on a rubber or pneumatic pad 14, the frame is lowered manually and is pressed firmly against the pad by straightening toggles 20, and colour is applied by spraying. During the first impression, the frame 18 bears against a gauge 38, and for the second, either of two gauges 42, 44 is swung down so that the stencil is moved sideways to cause the bands of colour to overlap. The stencil consists of strips 26 made of wood, metal or " Bakelite," (Registered Trade Mark), and covered with absorbent material such as blotting paper or cork, the strips being uniformly spaced and prevented from buckling by cross pieces 52. Each rib is tapered off at its upper edge to provide a wide entrance, and the ribs are of substantial length to provide a large surface such that the colour has time to evaporate and does not therefore drip on to the work. Where the same colour is applied in successive operations, the design consists of two similar stripes separated by a darker stripe, and where different colours are used, there are two differently coloured stripes separated by a blended colour stripe. In addition, there will be a stripe of the ground colour, or there may be several bands of ground colour. The skin is turned through an angle to receive further stripes, thus providing a checkered pattern. In a modification, the work is supported on a rotatable table held in selected position by means of a latch engaging one of four equally spaced notches in the table periphery. In this case, the gauge is a pivoted member adjustable to angular positions corresponding to various spacings and held in adjusted position by a spring-pressed plunger.
