Abstract

472,620. Fluid - pressure brakes. COATALEN, L. Dec. 21, 1935, Nos. 35465 and 35466. Void. Convention dates, Dec. 22, 1934 and July 12, 1935. [Class 103 (i)] Hydraulic brake comprises a low pressure pump 8 and an accumulator 14 adapted to supply a large quantity of fluid to take up slack in the brake transmission 7 and a high-pressure pump 9 adapted to apply pressure to the brakes. A cylindrical slide valve contained in a casing 6 and operated by a pedal 1 is adapted to connect the two pumps by pipes 19, 13, to the pipe 7 when the brakes are applied. A check valve 18 prevents back flow from the high-pressure pump into the accumulator. When the pedal is released, fluid is allowed to return from the pipe 7, by the pipe 33 to the reservoir 10. In a modification, the high-pressure pump is also provided with an accumulator and is connected to the valve 6 at 28, Fig. 5. The fluid from the low-pressure pump and accumulator is admitted to the brakes by groove 36 in the piston valve 23 operated by the brake pedal, when this valve is level with passage 47, When the fluid attains a certain pressure it passes by passages 48, 50 below a valve 43 which it raises and admits fluid from the high-pressure pump and accumulator to the brakes. The fluid pressure also acts beneath the driver-operated valve 23 to give a graduating action. In a further modification, the high-and low-pressure pumps circulate fluid through the driver's valve and a reservoir. The driver's valve is a ball operated through a spring and is adapted to stop the circulation and byepass the fluid to the brakes. In a modification of this arrangement this fluid is byepassed to cylinders which through a lever operate cylinders of a hydraulic transmission. The pivot of the lever carries a hand lever for emergency hand control. Both high-and low-pressure pumps comprise a cylindrical slide valve adapted to be moved by the fluid from the pump output when this fluid attains a certain value.
