[Class 44] A clip for use in securing a trim panel to the door or other part of a motor vehicle comprises a base 20, Fig. 4, with an upstanding reversely bent part 26 providing a resilient abutment terminating in a lip 27, the other end of the base having an upstanding part 21 merging into a bowed part 22 and clipping arm 23 with upturned end 25. The foundation sheet 28 of the panel has an aperture 32 of such size that, in mounting the clip on the panel, after insertion of the lip 27 with the abutment 26 bearing against one edge of the aperture, as in Fig. 4, pressure must be applied, as by a tool 33, to compress part 26 in order that the part 21 may enter the aperture. Preferably, the part 21 is inclined at an acute angle to the base 20, so that when in place the edge engaged by the part 21 has an undercut formation. Fig. 6 shows an alternative form of clip comprising a tongue 43 with a pair of laterally disposed abutment members 48 bowed at 47 to give resilience and having outwardly turned flanges 49. The clip is applied to the panel 51 by the use of pliers &c. to compress the abutment members sufficiently to allow insertion of the flanges 49 in suitably spaced apertures 56, the flanges springing into engagement behind the edges of the apertures when released. Fig. 16 shows another form of clip having a base-plate 70 with a struck-up tongue abutment 71, a clipping tongue 80, and a resilient abutment 76 bowed at 75 and with outwardly turned flange 77. The clip is inserted in tilted position as shown until abutment 71 bears against one edge of aperture 85, and abutment 76 is then compressed by tool 86 to allow flange 77 to pass into the aperture. In use, a number of suitably spaced clips are applied to the rear face and near the edges of the trim panel C, Fig. 1. The clips along one vertical edge are engaged with one flange 37 on the door, the panel is bowed to allow engagement of clips with the flange at the opposite edge of the door, subsequent flattening of the panel forcing the clips home, and the panel is finally moved bodily downwards to engage the clips with the bottom flange of the door.
