Abstract

472,322. Photo-electric control of projectile fuzes. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. March 21, 1936, Nos. 8520 and 8521. Convention dates, April 2, 1935 and Oct. 14, 1935. [Class 40 (iii)] A projectile is provided with a source of light 2 adapted to throw out a beam of light on a target, for example, an aircraft, and a light-sensitive cell 4 adapted to receive the light reflected by the target and to cause thereby the ignition of a primer 12 to explode the projectile. The source of light may be an aluminium or magnesium cartridge ignited a given time after the discharge of the projectile, and the light may be emitted evenly around the projectile through holes 3. The light reflected by the target is received in the projectile through holes 13 and passed by a conical prism 14 and a lens 17 to the cell 4 which may fire the primer by means of a relay 6 adapted to close the primary circuit of a transformer 8, the secondary circuit of which is coupled to the primer 12. Preferably the emitted light beam is made intermittent, for example by an arrangement of a few holes 3 only around the projectile. The intermittent actuation of the cell 4 then operates through a filter transformer and condensers 18, 19, 20, and a rectifying device 21, the direct current from which operates the relay 6. In this way the apparatus is unaffected by the uniform light of day. A safety switch 10 closed after a given time is put in the firing circuit.
