[Class 60] Apparatus for cleaning eggs comprises an impeller wheel with curved blades 4 driven by a motor 2, the blades serving to throw sand or other finely divided abrasive, fed through a sleeve 23 to the centre of the wheel, over the eggs 5, which are carried over a wire fence 9 concentric with the wheel by a rotating cage comprising annular side plates 6, 7 and transverse partitions 8. The eggs are fed to the compartments between the partitions by a rotating disc 14 having therein apertures 14a by which the eggs are moved over the padded top 16 of a housing 17 to an aperture 18 over the cage the eggs rest on the fence 9 during a part of the rotation of the cage and then rest on an outer wire fence until they reach a delivery shoot 11 leading to a box 12. Sand &c. is supplied from a hopper 21 to the sleeve 23, and sand escaping from the aperture 18 and into the box 12 is returned to the sleeve along conduits 24, 25. The disc 14 is rotated, from gearing in a casing 39, by a belt 36 driving the spindle 15 of the disc, and bevel gearing 33, 34, and belt gearing 28 .. 30 serves to drive the cage in synchronism with the disc 14. Dust, &c. falls onto plates 44 in the casing 13 enclosing the impeller wheel and cage, and passes to a bag 45, or in a modification, the casing is extended and provided with a curved conduit leading from the base of the casing to the centre of the wheel.
