Abstract

471,562. Net barriers for the defence of harbours. JENKINSON. E. G. May 9, 1936, No. 13136. [Class 9 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A pulley-block is provided with a pawl 3 which engages a link of a short length of chain 8 inserted in the hoisting rope 7 to retain the load in a desired position. The pawl is pivoted at 4, and its shorter arm is connected to a pair of springs 5 under tension. The pawl is moved by the springs into position to permit lowering of the load when the entire chain has been pulled past it in the hoisting dircetion. The groove in the pulley has a deep central portion 9 in which the rope lies clear of the pawl. When the apparatus is used in connection with harbour defences of the kind in which nets are stretched between fixed anchoring points, and one section of net which is to act as a gate is anchored at one end to a buoy and at the other end to a vessel, the rope connecting the gate to the vessel is passed round a pulley-block constructed as described above and located on a buoy remote from the vessel. When this rope is hauled in, the gate is opened and is locked in open position by the engagement of the pawl and chain. In this position the rope can be slackened to permit the passage of vessels over it. The rope is released in the manner already described, and the net restored to position in the barrier by hauling on a second rope.
