Abstract
2429. Chute, L. P. Jan. 31. Rigging.-A de vice for releasing a stay or guy - rope more particularly applicable to the back-stay of a sail ing-boat, consists o: a frame 7 journaled at 8 to the housing 6, the lower part o: which carries a wheel 9 having two series of teeth 10,11 The teeth 11 grip the rope 18 between the wheel and the housing, and the teeth 10 are o: ratchet form, so as to lock the wheel against similar teeth in the housing. The rope 18 passes round the pulley 14 on the frame 7 and over the sheave 15 fastened to the stay. When the boom strikes against the stay, as in gibing, it turns the link 7 about the pivot 8 and frees the rope 18, thus releasing the stay. A stop 19 is provided to prevent the frame 7 from moving too far. In a modified form, the ratchet teeth 10 are held by a spring-actuated pawl 20, Fig. 6, and are released by the stop 19. In another form the teeth are rounded, as shown in Fig. 8, and serve both to lock the rope 18 and the wheel in the housing 6.
