Abstract

471,269. Sewing machines. SANDBERG, J. T., and BJEREUS, S. R. April 14, 1936. No. 10688. Convention date, April 11, 1935. [Class 112] In a whip-stitching attachment in which the alteration or height of the whip-stitching needle is controlled by an oscillating element which co-operates with a ratchet, the oscillating element is a lever swinging about a fixed fulcrum and is provided with a thread guide which controls the whip-stitching thread guide. The device is carried on a plate 2 carrying pivots 3, 4. On the pin 4 is pivoted an arm 5 with an extension 6 forming a guide 7 for the horizontal needle bar 8. The bar 8 has a holder 9 for the whip-stitching needle 10. The arm 5 has also an arm 11 with an opening 12 for the disc 48 provided with three cams 13, rotating on the pin 3. The disc 48 co-operates with a curved part 51 of the opening 12 to raise and lower the whipstitching needle to cause it to move over and under the fabric edge. The needle 10 is horizontally reciprocated by a lever 29 pivoted on the pin 4 and connected to the needle bar 8 by a link 32 and rocked by a bell-crank lever 24 pivoted on a stud 16 on the member 5 and connected at one end to the vertical needle bar 21 and to the lever 29 at the other end by a link 26. The cam 48 obtains its intermittent action by a toothed wheel 14 moved by an arm 15 attached to the bell-cranh 24. The whipstitching thread reel is mounted on the pin 49 and passes through a guide 45 to a spring control 46 before reaching the eye in the needle 10. The spring 47 keeps the thread suitably stretched.
