Abstract

471,066. Television. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and WIKKENHAUSER, G. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5686. [Class 40 (iii)] A beam of light is passed through a medium 2 in which are set up supersonic mechanical waves ; the medium acts as a diffraction grating and the emergent light consists of a central beam, focused at 6, flanked by beams, focused at 7, 8, corresponding to spectra ; the beam 8 will normally be very weak and may be neglected ; a shutter 9 cuts off the central beam and those beams on one side of it ; the frequency of the supersonic waves is varied to vary the deviation of the side beams so that the beam 7 executes a linear movement, which is used as one component of scanning. The supersonic waves are generated by a piezo-electric crystal 3 and their frequency is varied in accordance with a saw-tooth wave form. The oscillating beam may be passed through a train of prisms to increase its angular deviation.
