Abstract

Phthalocyanines are prepared by heating phthalonitriles substituted by alkoxy or aryloxy groups or in which the benzene nucleus is connected in two positions to a further aryl residue in each case by an oxygen atom, with metals or metal compounds with or without diluents. Examples of starting materials are 4-ethoxy-phthalonitrile, prepared by subliming sodium 5-ethoxy-2-cyanobenzene - 1 - sulphonate with potassium ferrocyanide; 4-methoxyphthalonitrile; the 1-phenoxy-3 : 4-phthalonitrile obtained by heating with potassium ferrocyanide the sodium salt of 3-phenoxy-2-cyano-benzene-sulphonic acid; 2 : 3-dicyanodiphenylene dioxide, prepared by subliming the sodium salt of 2-cyano-diphenylene dioxide-3-sulphonic acid with potassium ferrocyanide. Starting materials which are converted into phthalonitriles of the types specified during the course of the reaction may also be used. The phthalocyanine products can be pasted from cold sulphuric or ethyl sulphuric acids, and can be sulphonated and then converted into lakes by treatment with polyvalent metal salts or lake-forming amines. They may be used for graphic wall-paper printing-and for colouring cuprammonium or viscose artificial silk. Specification 410,814 is referred to.
