Abstract

470,691. Rotary meters; stuffing - box substitutes. TRIGGS, W. W. (Pittsburgh Equitable Meter Co.) Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5795. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (v)] A rotor 15 with sliding vanes 26 connected in pairs, comprises upper and lower plates 17, 19, and an outer wall 3. The rotor is keyed to a vertical shaft 12 which drives recording or indicating mechanism 102 through gears 79, 92, and a one-way clutch mechanism 97. The vanes have connecting webs 38 provided with slots to accommodate the shaft 12. Rollers 49, 51 are mounted on pins on the blades and roll on tracks 52, 53 machined on the cylinder head 17. Further rollers 68 are mounted on the vanes and make contact with a cam surface 63. An abutment wall 5 is screwed into position between inlet and outlet ports 3, 4. The top of the rotor has depressions sloping from the centre outwards to holes 72 through which may pass any sediment in the liquid. Further holes 73 are provided in the rotor bottom leading to a sump 9. The rotor and vanes are suspended from the top bearing 66 so that clearances are arranged between the rotor and abutment 5, and between the rotor and the bottom bore 14. Shims 81<1> are provided to adjust the axial clearances. A ratchet plate 93 is pressed on to the end of the shaft 91 and carries two pawls 93a, Fig. 15, pivoted on pins 94, under pressure of a spring. These pawls co-operate with a dished ratchet disc 97 placed in a depression of a gear 92. In a modification, the vanes rest on slides instead of rollers. Fig. 10 shows a meter with a lower bearing 109 which is protected by washer 120 from sediment which might otherwise pass from the meter to the bearing. A spring 124 presses a gland 115 into light rubbing contact with the washers 120. The rotor top plate 131 may be removed by taking out securing screws and screwing them into further threaded holes until they abut the head 17 and force the plate 131 upwards. Washers 120 may be made of materials manufactured under the Registered Trade Marks " Micarta " and " Bakelite."
