Abstract
470,158. Automatic control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1936, No. 34857. Convention date, Feb. 21. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXIX and XL] Phase displacement.- Variations in phase distortion in the transmission of a wide band of frequencies, e.g. for television, due to temperature &c. changes are automatically compensated by the transmission of pilot currents subject to the same conditions. In the system shown two pilot frequencies f<1>, f<2> on either side of the television band and both harmonics of the same generator 10 are transmitted over the television cable 12 and are separated at an intermediate or receiving repeater by filters 17, 18. The lower frequency f<1> is stepped up by a harmonic generator HG2 and filter 19 to the other frequency f<2> and the two pilot signals, differing now only in phase, are applied to a thermocouple 23 controlling through a biassed double-contact relay 24 a reversible motor 25. By suitable adjustment of a phase-shifter 20 it is arranged that normally a certain number of the phase-distortion-equalizing sections PS0 ... PS3 are inserted, the number being increased or decreased according as the relay of low frequencies relative to high frequencies increases or decreases.
