Abstract
The vapour phase hydrogenation of olefines to the corresponding paraffins is effected at a pressure of 500--3500 lb. per sq. in. in presence of a catalyst consisting of freshly reduced ferric oxide. The invention is particularly applicable to the conversion of di-isobutylene into iso-octane. In this case the temperature of reaction is 240--350 DEG C. and the partial pressure of the di-isobutylene vapour is 2--10 per cent of the total pressure. The catalyst is prepared by the reduction with hydrogen at 300--500 DEG C. of ferric oxide in granular or pelleted form or supported on a carrier.
