Abstract

469,565. Sparking - plugs. ALBY, P. L. Jan. 27, 1936, No. 2584. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1935. [Class 7 (iv)] Throughout its whole length the central electrode is hollow and spaced apart from the surrounding insulation. Its lower end is closed by a sparking - terminal k. Air drawn through passages t, circulates around and through the electrode, transference taking place through an opening w. Circulation may be under atmospheric influence only, or there may be a connection to the engine intake or exhaust. The cooling-air circuit may be closed by a cap S. In a modification there is no opening w, and the hollow electrode and a reservoir at the upper end are filled with fluid. A ball-valve in the upper surface of the reservoir produces a whistling effect if overheating is taking place. The lower end of the insulator c extends beyond the electrode head and terminal h<1>, k, and is not coaxial with the casing, thus providing additional support for the terminal n. A metallic strip extends from the insulated electrode sufficiently near to the casing for a spark to pass if the plug electrodes are too widely separated.
