Abstract
469,046. Synchronous motors. LOCHNER, R. A., and MOSSAY, P. A. H. Feb. 10, 1936, No. 3979. [Class 35] A self-starting synchronous motor with two windings phasedisplaced 90‹ has the end of one winding located mid - way of the other to give an approximately balanced three - phase voltage across the terminals at starting, and the phase winding which is not required for continuous current excitation is short-circuited either on itself or through a portion of the other phase winding. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the exciter 11 is in series with the winding 1 to the mid-point of which the phase-displaced winding 2 is connected and the windings are connected to a three-phase starter 8, 9, 10, after starting, the winding 2 is short-circuited through the starter and through a portion of the low resistance winding 1 and serves as a damping winding. Instead of a three-phase starter, a two-phase starter with resistances 8 and 10 may be used. In the form shown in Fig. 3, an additional winding 3 is provided in phase opposition to winding 1 and the ratio of turns in windings 1, 2, 3 should be approximately 100, 86À6, 50. The windings 2 may be in smaller slots than the windings 1.
