Abstract

469,018. Piezo - electric vibrators. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and JEFFREE, J. H. Jan. 14, 1936, No. 1181. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In a device for generating mechanical waves of supersonic frequency in a body and comprising a piezo-electric crystal assembly adapted for excitation by electrical currents of the desired frequency, there is interposed between the crystal assembly and the body and intermediate layer of a third substance having a thickness of substantially one half wave-length or an odd number of half wave-lengths, the intermediate layer being in contact with the body and separated from the crystal assembly by a space filled with a material having an acoustic refractive index less than that of the crystal assembly and not less than that of the body, the thickness of the material in the space being substantially one quarter of a wave-length or an odd number of quarter wavelengths and the third substance having an acoustic refractive index which is intermediate of those of the crystal assembly and the material in the space. The third substance may be aluminium or a glass having a suitable acoustic refractive index, and the material in the space may be wax, cellulose, shellac, resin, the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane," or the material of the body. The device may be used in the lightmodulating arrangement described in Specification 439,236, [Group. XL]. Specification 466,212 also is referred to.
