Abstract

468,987. Contact-members for switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ERIKSEN, J. May 4, 1936, No. 12537. [Class 38 (v)] The hand or electromagnetic ally - operated contact 6 of a switch is suspended mechanically by two or more closelywound coil springs 9 having their axes substantially parallel to one another and at right-angles to the direction of motion of the contact, each spring being located at each end on a portion of the switch, while the contactmember is fixed to each spring at a point between its ends. The contact 6 is preferably of carbon and is located by means of an arc horn 31 and secured by a setscrew 8 in a carrier 7, which is secured by means of two W-clamps 10 to the centre of two (or more) lightly-coiled springs 9 arranged one behind the other. A W-clamp 12 secures the upper ends of the springs 9 to a bracket 11 riveted to an insulating plate 14, whereas the lower ends pass freely through a W-guide 13. The switch may be closed by a toggle or other hand-operated mechanism or by an electromagnet coil 18, and in closing, the springs 9 bend and slide axially in guide 13, so allowing the contact 6 to slide along the companion contact 1 and locate itself flat, regardless of wear. The contact-structure is carried on armature 15 having a back-stop 20 formed by a cross-member between the side plates 21 and a knife-edge pivot 16 formed by the base plate of the coil case. The pigtail 25 shown may be dispensed with when light currents are carried by the switch, and remote control or indicating contacts 24 may be provided.
