Abstract

518,400. Snap-action switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 27, 1938, No. 28107. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] A manually-operable switch comprises an operating-member 10, Fig. 3, a movable contactmember 21 loosely connected thereto, bearing against a projection 23 thereon, and held thereagainst by a spring 26 between the operating- member and the support 14 to which it is pivoted, and a stationary contact 30 on the support, the arrangement being such that the member 21 is pivotable about the projection 23 against the force applied by the spring to provide a wiping-action between the contacts. The member 21 is provided with a recess 22 to provide a seating for the projection 23; it is loosely connected to the member 10 by a pin 24, the parts being held in position by the engagement of the head thereof with the spring 26. The operating- member 10 has a projection 13 having a recess to accommodate a link 16 which co-operates with a spring 18 to provide a snap-action, the spring is secured in position by a bolt connected by a flexible conductor 28 to the member 21 and of which the nut is formed as a terminal 19. In operation, the member 10 is forcibly moved either way sufficiently to move the member 16, whereupon the movement is completed by the spring 18. The fixed contact 30 is mounted on a block 31 of conducting-material secured to or integral with a strap 32 and formed to accommodate a magnetic blow-out 34. A second projection 43 is formed on the member 10 for use when the fixed contact is above the member 21. A number of such switches may be mounted side by side, the blow-out being in the form of a common bar of magnetized material 34, Fig. 1, secured at each end to an arc-chute member 36 and passing through further arch-chute members 35 between each switch. The arc-chute members 36 and the bar are secured to pole-piece members 37 and the assembly is secured to the insulating base 14 by bolts 39, 40 serving as a common terminal. The blow-out may be dispensed with or replaced by an electromagnetic coil. Specification 423,897, [Group II], is referred to.
