Abstract

468,964. Manifolding stationery ; carbon papers. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H. (Standard Register Co.) Jan. 15, 1936, No. 1346. [Class 16] [Also in Group XVI] Carbon paper or other transfer material is provided with a continuous coating of carbon or the like over its whole surface, and is then treated to render selected areas non- transferring, either by coating these areas with a non-transferring substance, or by removing the carbon from the areas. In the manifolding assembly shown, the record webs are coated on the undersides with carbon &c. and the areas 4 have been treated so that matter written thereabove on the writing faces of the webs will not be transferred. The positions of the areas 4 are indicated as at 5 on the writing surfaces of the webs. Instead of record webs coated with carbon, carbon webs may be interleaved in the assembly. In one method of providing inert areas 4, the carbon paper is passed through a printing-machine, preferably of the cylinder type, and ink is applied over the areas 4, or a silver bronze ink mixed with a dryer, such as perilla oil, and a resin gum. In another method, the carbon paper is passed through a printing-machine where the carbon in the areas 4 is removed by a mixture comprising heavy opaque white printing ink, kerosene, and ether. The areas 4 are preferably then coated with varnish.
