Abstract
Water-soluble condensation products are manufactured by sulphonating a fusible resin obtainable from a phenolic substance and an organic agent known to be capable of linking aromatic nuclei, without rendering it water-soluble thereby, and then treating it with a further quantity of one of the said organic reagents until it is water-soluble. As starting materials may be employed the products obtained by condensing phenols and their substitution products, preferably in an acid medium, with, for example, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, chloracetone or dichlorether. The sulphonation may be effected by treating these materials with less than molecular quantities of concentrated sulphuric acid or other sulphonating agents. The products may be employed as reserving agents in dyeing goods containing wool and cellulosic fibres with substantive dyestuffs, as agents for the aftertreatment of textile fibres and tissues, e.g. for weighting, as thickening or binding agents or as tanning agents. In examples: (1) phenol is heated with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid, and the product (mainly dihydroxydiphenylmethane) is heated with sulphuric acid monohydrate and then condensed with formaldehyde; (2) phenol is heated with monochloracetone and the product is heated with sulphuric acid monohydrate and then condensed with formaldehyde; (3) crude cresol is heated with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid and the product is heated with sulphuric acid monohydrate and then condensed with acetaldehyde; (4) phenol is heated with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda and the resin is precipitated with hydrochloric acid, heated with sulphuric acid and then condensed with formaldehyde.
