Abstract
467,440. Electrolytic production of magnesium. THIEMANN, W. H. A. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Dec. 16, 1935, No. 34927. [Class 41] In producing magnesium by electrolysis of a fused electrolyte, the melt consists of magnesium fluoride and magnesium chloride in proportions corresponding approximately to the eutectic proportion and is electrolyzed at 600-800‹ C. at a voltage below that required for decomposing magnesium chloride e.g. below 6 volts at 800‹ C., whilst magnesium oxide is introduced preferably near the anode, whereby the decomposed magnesium fluoride is continuously regenerated. The proportions may be 70 parts by weight of magnesium chlor ide to 30 parts by weight o magnesium fluoride. The mag nesium salts may be partially replaced or supplemented by chlorides or fluorides of barium, sodium, potassium and lithium. An iron cathode d and carbon anodes b sheathed with porcelain or quartz c are used, partitions e and deflecting plates f directing liberated gases towards the anodes.
