Abstract
467,268. Cables. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd., and SMITH, E. W. Nov. 14, 1935, No. 31593. [Class 36] A high-frequency cable comprises coaxial conductors or twin conductors enclosed within a common sheath which have an air space insulation formed by a series of spaced insulating washers having radial or edgewise extending slots to receive the inner conductor or twin conductors, the washers being mechanically interconnected at least in pairs by insulating means which engage with the slots. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a conductor A is carried centrally within an outer conductor B by spaced radially slotted washers 1 which are connected together by an insulating strip 3, passing through the slots and having lugs 4 which are positively connected to the washers by cementing or by mortised joints. In manufacturing the cable the strip 3 is fed forward with the conductor A resting on the lugs 4 and at appropriate intervals a washer is struck down from a magazine on to the lug 4 and secured thereto bv adhesive. The outer conductor B may be of lead, braided wire, or braided or helically applied metal tapes, but preferably consists of metal tapes 5, each of which is bent to provide a flanged portion 6 intermediate of its sides, the flanged portion being rolled down over the edge of an adjacent tape after the tapes are stranded over the spacers 1. Fig. 3 shows a washer having two slots 1<1> to receive twin conductors, perforations being formed between the slots to reduce the amount of solid dielectric in the cable. The strip 3 may also be perforated.
