Abstract

467,129. Grinding and polishing edges of glass plates &c. KLAGES, N. H. May 29, 1936, No. 15213. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1935. [Class 60] A machine for grinding and polishing the edges of glass plates, &c., for example, window panes for automobiles, comprises a disc 1 carried by a horizontal shaft 2, and provided with clamps 10 for holding two plates A, B with their straight edges A<1> parallel and spaced from the shaft 2, so that the edges A<2> ... A<4> to be treated form a substantially continuous outline. The disc 1 is rotated, through speed reducing gearing 4 .. 8, by an electric motor 3, and the edges are ground by a, preferably, grooved grinding-wheel 9 mounted on an arm 11 pivoted at 16 and counterbalanced by an electric motor 13, which drives the wheel, and by weights 18 so that the wheel is yeildingly pressed against the plates ; a water pan 19 is located below the grinder. The edges are polished, after grinding, by a polishing-wheel 12 driven by a motor 14 and carried by a pivoted arm 110 urged towards the plates by a weight 20 and cable 21. In order to obtain even grinding action on the edges, notwithstanding the different radii from the shaft 2 of the parts a ... e of the plates, a rheostat 23 is provided for varying the speed of the motor 3 driving the shaft 2, and the control arm 24 of the rheostat is connected by a link 26 to the upper end of an arm 25 pivoted at its lower end to the machine frame and provided with a roller 27 held by a spring 29 against a cam 28 mounted on the shaft 2. The cam has parts b<1> ... e<1>, &c., so that, according to the part of the plate edge being ground, the arm 25 is moved to increase or diminish the speed of rotation of the disc 1 ; cams 60 on the disc 1 engage discs 61, 62 on the wheels 9 and 12 respectively to hold the wheels away from the plates when the space between the two plates is opposite the wheels. In order to prevent vibration, the periphery of the disc 1 is engaged by two brake shoes 30, each carried by an arm 31 pivoted to the frame at its lower end, the upper ends of the arms being connected by a spring 33 and adjustable rods 32. The plates A, B are clamped to the disc 1 by means of elements 35 adjustably mounted in a diametral slot 36 in the disc, and each element has pivoted therein, on a pin 39, a pair of jaws 38 having rubber blocks 42 to press the plates against rubber blocks 41 on stationary jaws 40 on the elements 35 ; rubber blocks 43 also are provided to engage the inner edges of the plates. The jaws 38 are moved by links 46 connected to the short arms of bell-crank levers 44 pivoted at 45 and operated, one pair for each plate, by handles 48, 49 slidable on rods 51 carried by a boss 47 on the disc 1 ; a plate, when finished is removed during continuous operation of the machine, and a new plate inserted, by operation of the appropriate handle 48 or 49. The plates are located correctly by rubber tipped arms 55 carried by rods 57 adjustable on the levers 44, and blocks 59, with rubber inserts 59a, mounted on the disc 1 support the plates. The machine may be made as a twin unit, the shaft 2 being extended rearwardly and fitted with a second disc 1, &c.
