Abstract
466,784. Gearing for stopping and starting machinery. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BATES, A., and BARKER, W. A. Dec. 4, 1935, No. 33554. [Class 80 (ii)] One end of a brake band 7, encircling a disc 5 secured to the shaft 3 of a cutting-out press adapted to be driven from a pulley 1 through a spring-urged clutch dog 79 controlled by a wedge arm 73 secured to a spindle 55 journalled in the machine frame, is secured to a pivoted arm 49 connected by a link 51 to an arm 53 secured to the spindle 55. The arm 73 carries a spring-loaded trip lever 69 co-operating with a manually-controlled arm 57 journalled on the spindle 55 and with a cam 83 on the shaft 3. As the arm 73 is raised, by depressing a handle 63 linked to the arm 57, to allow the clutch to engage, the toggle formed by the link 51 and arm 53 is broken, thereby relieving the pressure of the band 7 against the disc 5. As the shaft 3 rotates, the cam 83 operates to disengage the lever 69 from the arm 57, the arm 73 is depressed by a spring 75, the toggle is straightened, and the clutch disengages towards the end of one revolution. The other end of the band 7 is secured to a pivoted arm 9 connected by an adjustable link 19 to one arm of a bell-crank lever 29, the other arm of which is linked to one arm of a lever 37, the other arm of which is linked to the vertically-movable ram 45 of the machine. Thus, as the ram moves downwards, the band is slackened further. As the ram moves upwards, the toggle 51, 53 being at this time in straightened condition, the band is tightened on the disc and the machine is brought to rest at the top of its stroke. To prevent rebound of the arm 73, the latter may be connected by a rod to a pivoted arm extending beneath and engaging a cam secured on the shaft, the cam being so formed that it holds the arm 73 in depressed condition until the clutch has been disengaged and the brake has been applied but releases the arm just before the shaft stops. Specification 22023 /05, [Class 80], is referred to.
