[Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XV] A drawing-appliance for producing regular written characters in any desired style and size comprises a graduated bar b adjustably pivoted and secured by a clamping-screw l to a board a, and carrying a pointer m reading over a protractor d on the board a for different inclinations of letter strokes, and an adjustable cross-bar c carrying two pencil-holders p, p<1> and a compass point set to graduations x y, y<1> corresponding to thicknesses of outline for different heights of letter. In use, two parallel lines are drawn at a distance apart equal to the desired height of the letter, and the board a is set with its lower edge parallel to these lines. The two pencil-holders are then used, by movement of the cross-bar c along the bar b, to make double outline vertical or oblique strokes according to the setting of the pointer m or horizontal strokes by turning the appliance through a right-angle ; or after detaching the cross-bar c from the bar b, curved strokes by suitable use of the compass point q. The board is provided with a handle k and with sliding gauges f, e and corresponding viewing slots g, h for indicating the width and spacing of the individual characters for a standard height, from which the width and spacing for other heights is calculated proportionally.
