Abstract

Non-metallic surfaces such as glass, glazed or vitrified surfaces, or hardened synthetic resins such as phenol formaldehyde are treated with a solution of an organic silicate or a mixture of organic silicates in an organic solvent prior to coating with metal, for example by distillation of the coating metal in a vacuum. The substance known as "siliconester" which consists mainly of ethyl orthosilicate together with some higher silicates containing colloidal silica in alcoholic solution may be used. A glass surface is preferably first washed in concentrated caustic alkali, washed with water, swabbed with concentrated acid such as nitric acid, washed with water, treated with alcohol to remove any remaining water, and then dried with compressed air. It is then treated with the solution of organic silicates, excess solution is removed, and the surface is coated with metal preferably by the method described in Specification 436,792.
