Abstract

Arylthiazolines and arylselenazolines having a ketonic acylmethylene group attached to the carbon atom in the a -position to the azoline nitrogen atom are made by treating the quaternary salt of a 1-methylbenzothiazole, of a 2-methyl-a - or b -naphthathiazole, or of a 1-methylbenzselenazole with a halide of a mono-carboxylic acid in presence of an acid-binding agent. In examples: (a) 1-methylbenzthiazole metho-p-toluene sulphonate is condensed in pyridine with acetyl chloride or propionyl chloride; (b) 1-methylbenzthiazole etho-p-toluenesulphonate is similarly condensed with acetyl chloride, propionyl chloride, benzoyl chloride, trichloroacetyl chloride, lauroyl chloride, furoyl chloride or m-nitrobenzoyl chloride; (c) 1-methylbenzthiazole alliodide is similarly condensed with propionyl chloride; (d) 1-methylbenzthiazole n-propiodide with propionyl chloride; (e) 1-methylbenzthiazole n-butyl iodide with propionyl chloride; (f) 4-chloro - 1 - methylbenzthiazole ethyl - p-toluenesulphonate with propionyl chloride; (g) 2 - methyl - b - naphthathiazole metho-p-toluene sulphonate with propionyl chloride; (h) 2-methyl-b -naphthathiazole etho-p-toluene sulphonate with acetyl chloride or propionyl chloride; (i) 1-methylbenzselenazole ethiodide with acetyl chloride or propionyl chloride. Acyl bromides or iodides can also be used. Other halides specified are crotonyl chloride, cinnamoyl chloride, phenylacetyl chloride, chloracetyl chloride. 4 - Chloro - 1 - methylbenzthiazole ethyl p-toluenesulphonate is made by heating the thiazole and ethyl-p-toluenesulphonate.
