Abstract
Resistance units of silver sulphide having a high negative temperature coefficient of resistance are made by (a) compressing silver sulphide powder into a coherent mass by a pressure of at least 10000 lb. sq. inch; (b) depositing silver sulphide on a supporting member by chemical reaction from a sulphur containing solution of silver salts; (c) suspending a mass of silver in an atmosphere of sulphur vapour at 300 DEG C., the unit so formed being aged by heating in dry nitrogen at a temperature between 200--300 DEG C., for one hour. The unit produced by compression of silver sulphide powder may be heated in sulphur vapour at 300--400 DEG C. before heating in nitrogen. Coatings may be produced on glass, ceramic or similar material by deposition from a solution containing silver nitrate and thiourea by treatment with sodium hydroxide, or from solutions of silver nitrate or acetate and sodium thiosulphate or thiocyanate, the carrier being washed in stannous chloride solution. The units are completed by spraying metal on to the ends thereof, and securing conducting leads to the deposit. The units may be used to control the gain of an amplifier or compensate for variations in the resistance of transmission lines.
