Abstract

[Class 40 (iv)] An electro-acoustical device comprises a diaphragm having a central portion separated from an annular marginal portion by an intermediate annular portion to which a voice-coil support is rigidly secured and which is formed to have such rigidity relative to the remaining portions of the diaphragm that this intermediate portion alone propagates the highest audible frequencies. The intermediate rigid portion is preferably formed with a groove in which the coil support is secured. As shown in Figs. 1, 4 the intermediate rigid portion 14 is formed as an inverted groove to which is cemented a cylindrical former 10 of mica located in an annular gap formed between magnetic members 1, 5. The former has longitudinal cracks to facilitate its formation into the cylindrical shape. The central portion of the diaphragm is formed as a dome 12 and the rigid portion 14 is extended outwardly in the form of a skirt 15 having a flat peripheral flange secured to a soft ring 13 clamped at its periphery between a ring 19 and a horn 16. The ring 13, which is preferably of chamois or of cotton napped on one side and coated on the other side with rubber latex, forms the low frequency part of the diaphragm. A relatively stiff ring 18, preferably of cardboard, is cemented to the ring 13. The ring 19 is spaced from the poleplate 5 by spacers 20. The centre portion of the inner polepiece is formed with a channel 23 dimensioned in conjunction with the volumes of the air chamber 22 under the dome 12 and of the air chamber 21 formed behind the ring 13 so that the pressures in these chambers are approximately equal when the diaphragm is vibrated at low frequencies. In a modification, Fig. 5, the ring 13a is clamped between the horn 16a and the front face of a cabinet having its walls made of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Celotex," or alternatively provided with a layer 26 of soundabsorbing material, such as ozite or cotton batting. The central portion of the diaphragm is formed as an outwardly directed part 12a and a dished central portion 12b.
