Abstract
465,683. Grinding and abrading machines. NORTON CO. March 23, 1936, No. 8595. Convention date, April 3, 1935. [Class 60] As a work-piece W is ground by a wheel G, a calipering member 18 is moved upwardly by a spring 16 and a lever 21 is operated by a spring 51 to depress a rubber diaphragm 29 covering a box 27 containing mercury or other liquid. The mercury is thereby forced upwards in a tube 34 having an internally tapered upper portion 36 formed of insulating material. When the work-piece has reached a predetermined size the mercury completes a circuit from an electrode 35 to an electrode 41 and stops the feed-mechanism of the wheel G. Grinding continues by reason of the strain set up in the machine parts and when the work has reached the required size another circuit is completed from the electrode 35 to an electrode 43 and energizes a solenoid as described in Specification 363,695 to cause the wheel G to move away from the work. The electrodes 41, 43 are threaded in metal insets 39, 40 in the upper portion of the tube 34, the electrode 41 being adjusted by rotation of a knurled head 47 acting through gearing 45, 42 and the electrode being adjusted by rotation of a knurled head 44. The mechanism may be mounted in a hollow base 5 mounted on the grinding machine table 1.
