[Class 120 (i)] The machine for decorticating fibrous leaves described in the parent Specification and comprising slow-moving and fast-moving decorticating drums, is modified in that each drum is provided with means for cleaning the decorticating pins or combs thereon. The cleaning arrangements are operated by cam devices associated with each drum and comprise means for automatically clearing the pins of any pulpy matter adhering thereto preferably by arranging for the pins to be withdrawn at least once in each revolution of the drum into the slots through which they project, the slots being faced with or associated with leather, rubber, brushes, bristles or other cleaning devices. In one form of machine having two sets of drums, each set comprising a relatively slow-moving drum provided with cleaning or decorticating bars carrying pins f, the clearing arrangements for the slow and fast drums are shown respectively in Figs. 7 and 9 and comprise a stationary cam g, rollers h carried upon levers i which are fixed to fulcrum bars k having levers l supporting the rocker arms m which carry the cleaning or decorticating pins f. The slots are provided with brushes n which may comprise a brush at each side, Fig. 11, or one brush extending across the slot and held at both ends. Ramps p are provided to lift the leaves into position for engagement by the cleaning drums and in one form the ramp p, Fig. 14, is pivoted at q under control of a spring r to allow the ramp to give slightly on passage of a leaf with a very thick butt.
